Burial Cards Index

IWRO Burial Cards Index - Click here to search

The Burial Card Index records for the Churches (and the House of Industry) of the Isle of Wight are held by the Isle of Wight Record Office (IWRO) and have been based on the Registers compiled, for the most part, by Parish officers. (see iwight.com/council/OtherServices/Record-Office/Using-the-Record-Office )

You will need to enter the user name (iowfhs) and the current password, in order to search these indexes. The password is changed in February each year and is given in the current Journal sent to paid up Members with full membership, or available as an eJournal on this website.
The Burial Cards Index entries for the period 1537 - 1900 have been transcribed by IWFHS Volunteers, and we now can present these as a searchable database. The records are searchable by Surname within a date range, for any church, or for a particular church. You can also search for all events registered at a particular church.

Many of the Church Burial Registers from 1901 to 2000 have been transcribed previously and are available at the Monumental Inscriptions Index.

Note that an entry in a Church Register does not always mean that the person was buried in the Churchyard. Many Churches do not have burials; the person may have been buried in a municipal cemetery; later records may refer to services held where the person was subsequently cremated. Conversely, a burial in a particular churchyard or burial ground may not be recorded in the expected Church Register.

As with all such records there may be errors in transcription so it is best to check with the original registers if possible.
