Island Friendly Societies
Speaker - Roger Logan PhD
Roger Logan lives in Bembridge and is the Director / Secretary of the Foresters Heritage Trust in Southampton.
During the 1800's the Isle of Wight was home to numerous Friendly Societies and one of the largest societies was the Ancient Order of Foresters
which at one time boasted over 2,000 members in Cowes making it the largest branch in the England. Not many people are aware of the role these societies
played in British society over a 250 year period. Roger will be talking briefly about the history of the various Island societies and will be bringing a selection of banners,
and other ephemera. He has written a booklet "An Introduction to Friendly Society Records" which is available from the Federation of FHS GenFair website.

COACH TRIPS TO LONDON to
or the London Record Offices - trips for 2010
The proposed dates for coach trips to London during 2010 are as
follows:
The National Archives
Thursday 25 November
Despite the increase in the number and type of records coming on to the internet The National Archives is the primary source of information for all UK official records, particularly
records such as Army and Royal Navy, and all other Government departments. Here is your chance to see the original documents for yourself, or in some cases, on microfilm. The cost of photocopies
is also considerably less than ordering from the The National Archives online service.
Cost of coach trips : Members = £20, Non-members = £25.
Note that the Society does subsidise the costs of the coach hire. If you travelled by rail to Kew then a typical adult fare would be in the region of £50, so this is really good value for money, and you don't have to change trains !
Local travel and ferry travel is not included. Coaches leave from Portsmouth.
London Record Offices
Wednesday 27 October
A central London drop off point will enable you to visit record repositories such as the Guildhall Library
or the Society of Genealogists.
Please note : the Family Records Centre in Middleton Street, London closed in March 2008, with many of the records held there being transferred to The National Archives at Kew.
Also note that the Lord Louis Mountbatten Library in Newport has a microfiche copy of the Births, Marriages and Deaths Index for England and Wales, and the 1881 Census on CD-ROM.

Cottages, 46 Newbarn Road, East Cowes, IOW, PO32 6AY
