Poor Relief Index
The Isle of Wight Union records of Out Relief under the Poor Law Acts are held by the Isle of Wight Record Office (IWRO) and have been based on the
Registers compiled, for the most part, by the clerks of the Guardians of the Poor.

You will need to enter the user name (iowfhs) and the current password, in order to search these indexes. The password is changed in February each year and is given in the current Journal sent to paid up Members with full membership, or available as an eJournal on this website.
The Register entries for the Isle of Wight Union and Guardians of the Poor have been transcribed by IWFHS Volunteers, and we now can present these as a searchable database. The records are searchable by Surname or keyword; You can also search for all entries using the wildcard % character, and you can also see the Minutes from each Meeting as transcribed by us.
The original records fall into two main series :

- 1a. the names of the Guardians and Directors present
- 1b. Minutes of specific actions taken or to be taken by or on behalf of the Guardians and Directors
- 2. Payments to individuals granted by named Guardians and Directors
- 3. Payments to individuals granted by the Committee
Printed Lists of Paupers, by Year and Quarter

As with all such records there may be errors in transcription so it is best to check with the original registers if possible.
